To do good Joomla SEO, or SEO for any website even if it is not Joomla, you need to be able to focus on those keywords which your readers are going to be focusing on. This is the most crucial step in your SEO strategy. You can either chose to focus on popular keywords such as let’s say “Joomla”, or else focus on longer tail keywords. The long tail keywords are those keywords which generate less traffic overall, say for example Joomla SEO tips.
If you focus on many of these, you might be able to get more traffic with less effort. This is because the longer tail keywords have less competition and you are more likely to get better search engine placements on these keywords or key phrases.
What can you use for your keyword research? Google Webmasters is a great source for knowing how your readers are coming to your pages, and lets you expand on specific keywords which you might want to rank better in.
An even better tool to use for your keyword reseach is Ahrefs. This is a tool which is fully focused towards getting excellent SEO results. It is of course a paid service, but if you’re serious about SEO, then you’ll have to invest both time and money into it. Their Keyword Explorer tool is amazing to find opportunities of keywords to rank for.
You can also choose to go for synonyms or keywords which have similar meanings, and you can scroll to the bottom of Google’s search engine pages to see what Google is suggesting as alternatives (if Google is saying it, maybe you should give that some importance ;))
You can also browse through your organic search traffic via Google Webmasters and check which phrases are generating impressions for your content and then focus on those keywords / keyphrases. If you do know the industry well, you should also use your industry knowledge to enhance or tweak the keywords you are finding to focus them on particular problems / issues which people are likely to be searching for.
Remember that the recent Google algorithm updates such as Hummingbird encourage long phrases, questions and other natural language rather than just top keywords.
Forums, google groups, LinkedIn groups, Google+ groups or other places where your target niche hangs out will all give you good tips on what you should focus. So once again if we are focusing on Joomla SEO tips are our keyword, we should join both Joomla and SEO groups, and ideally so that we can merge keywords and phrases coming both from Joomla and from SEO.
Another important SEO tip: This process of choosing your keywords is obviously not a one off shot, you need to keep enhancing your keywords list and key phrases and then eventually do your SEO for Joomla or your favourite CMS as necessary. This is an ongoing process which needs to go hand in hand with your our other Joomla SEO tips.
